Heart Disease – What You’re Getting Wrong

In Phil Says by Philip Yiin

2 months ago, Dr. Dwight Lundell, M.D, a renowned heart surgeon finally came clean. His confession was headlined with the title “World renowned heart surgeon speaks out on what really causes heart disease”.

Who is Dr. Dwight and why should you care? He was the Chief of Staff and Chief of Surgery at Banner Heart Hospital, Mesa, AZ. He also has a private practice, the Cardiac Care Center. He is also a published author and the Founder of the Healthy Humans Foundation that promotes human health with a focus on helping large corporations promote wellness.

The first paragraph of his confession reads:

“We physicians with all our training, knowledge and authority often acquire a rather large ego that tends to make it difficult to admit we are wrong. So, here it is. I freely admit to being wrong.”

The following paragraphs are equally humbling:

“The only accepted therapy was prescribing medications to lower cholesterol and a diet that severely restricted fat intake… Deviations from these recommendations were considered heresy and could quite possible result in malpractice… These recommendations are no longer scientifically or morally defensible”

The rest of the article proceeds to explain that the real cause of heart disease is NOT cholesterol and fat but INFLAMMATION. Inflammation is a normal and healthy process – however, the constant exposure of the body to toxicity and foods that it was never designed to deal with results in a condition called chronic inflammation.

A mainstream diet that is low in fat and high in polyunsaturated fats and carbohydrates causes repeated injury to the blood vessels and results in the chronic inflammation that eventually leads to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity. Don’t take my word for it – read the article attached below.

And yet, his confession is nothing new – our practice has long since questioned the wisdom of “opinion makers” (Dr. Lundell’s words, not ours) in industry and health and have had success addressing diabetes, hypertension and other cardiovascular conditions with sound tailored nutritional advice.

And we aren’t the only ones – biochemists, nutritionists and other doctors around the World have been questioning this notion for years only to be faced either by confusion at best by your average client/patient or derision at worst by cardiologists.

The point of this article is not to put the medical profession down but to raise awareness and finally clear the confusion surrounding heart disease. We have seen the impact and hurt in patients and loved ones alike when handed a heart disease diagnosis despite consuming a low-fat seemingly healthy diet. Individuals who aimed to be admirably diligent and proactive but, being misguided, succumbed to disease anyway.

And this situation between dietary recommendations and heart disease is just one bodily system – the cardiovascular system. The same confusion can be found in a range of other chronic diseases including diabetes, obesity and various notions surrounding detoxification. It is time that members of the public questioned the conventional nutritional wisdom that is applied to chronic disease even if it comes from medical doctors, whatever the disease.
